Initial Editorial Analysis 25 Sep 2006
Notes on Authorship of Name both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Editorial Recommendation new name or combination probably needed in 2012 [see Correspondence 2 under Callitropsis]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Jim A. Bartel see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don is to be treated as Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin.
Correspondence 2 25 Sep 2006 e-mail from Jim A. Bartel see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that: although Little et al. (2004 [Am. Jour. Bot. 91(11):1872-1881]) stated that the "genus Callitropsis non Callitropsis sensu Compton (1922), with C. nootkatensis (D. Don) Örest. [sic, indicated here by Editor of this Index] designated as its type, was described in 1865," Mill and Farjon (2004 [sic; 2006 Taxon 55(1):229-231]) clarified this issue, stating that "Neither Chamaecyparis nootkatensis nor Thujopsis borealis was explicitly said to be the type of Callitropsis by Örsted, and neither was recombined under Callitropsis by him. The latter point is important since Little & al. (l.c.: 1879) have incorrectly written (bold emphasis ours) 'The genus Callitropsis non Callitropsis sensu Compton (1922), with C. nootkatensis (D. Don) Örest. [sic, indicated here by Bartel] designated as its type, was described in 1865 [sic, indicated here by Bartel].' but Örsted never actually made this combination as required by Art. 33.1. However, Florin in Farr & al. (l.c.) designated Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don as (lecto)type of Callitropsis. Even though that name as such was not mentioned in Örsted's work, which refers to "Chamaecyparis nutkaensis", as this is an orthographic variant of Ch. nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach based on Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don, it follows (Art. 61.4) that Cupressus nootkatensis was in fact included in Callitropsis by Örsted and is thus eligible for consideration in choosing a type when none was originally designated (Art. 10.2). Hence, Florin's lectotypification by that name is acceptable." Correspondence 2 concludes that, "as noted by Little (2006 [Syst. Bot. 31(3):461-480]), the taxon author for Callitropsis nootkatensis should be '(D. Don [in Lambert]) Florin' and not '(D. Don) Örest.'" [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index.]
Correspondence 3 2 Sep 2009 e-mail from Jim A. Bartel see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 is a reference to a complicated and rather lengthy discussion of the nomenclature of this genus and species by Debreczy et al. (2009 Phytologia 91:140-159), in which it is indicated that on 17 Jan 2009 "Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. nom. inval." and "Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. ex Florin" were both posted to International Plant Names Index, and that as of 26 Jan 2009, Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. ex Florin also was declared a nom. inval., and the name was validated as Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin ex D. P. Little, Syst Bot 31(3):474, with Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don indicated as basionym. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin ex D. P. Little, from Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin previously in this Index, 2 Sep 2009.]
