Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Asclepias linaria Cav.
APOCYNACEAE (genus previously included in Asclepiadaceae)
Initial Editorial Analysis 5 Nov 2012
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 23 Oct 2012 e-mail from Tom Chester, including forwarded e-mail from Gene Thomas see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 questions whether or not Asclepias linaria occurs in CA, stating that it had not been included in floristic accounts of the state or any part thereof prior to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], that there are only two known herbarium specimens from CA, both obtained from cultivated individuals, and that there aren't even any vouchers from westernmost AZ. [The Editor of this Index is probably responsible for the addition of Asclepias linaria to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]. He was checking page proofs of his treatment of the Asclepiadaceae for the Generic Flora of the Southeastern United States about the same time he was scientifically editing the treatment of that family submitted by Carol Hoffman for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], and most likely suggested that the species be added based on the fact that Woodson (The North American Species of Asclepias L. Ann Mo Bot Gard 41:1--211. 1954) had indicated it with one dot in California in his distribution map for the species, with the text reading "California: San Diego County", although no specimens were cited. Because the two known California specimens mentioned above were from plants cultivated in Solano and Riverside counties, not San Diego County, there is a chance Woodson was not dealing with a record or records from cultivation, but rather from the wild. The Editor of this Index wrote to Warren Douglas Stevens, a specialist in Asclepiadaceae at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where Woodson was employed while preparing his treatment of Asclepias, about this possibility on 2 Nov 2012.]
Correspondence 2 5 Nov 2012 e-mail from Warren Douglas Stevens, in response to e-mail of 2 Nov 2012 from the Editor of this Index see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that there is a sheet at MO (Orcutt 3673) that looks [italics from Editor of this Index] like it was collected in San Diego, but in fact the sheet has a blank Missouri Botanical Garden label stamped "C R Orcutt San Diego California" and a separate scrap of paper with the number, all of which Stevens translates as Orcutt's address [he did in fact live in San Diego], with no collection data for the actual specimen. Correspondence 2 goes on to indicate that neither the known range nor elevation of the species would fit San Diego particularly well, that the Orcutt number does fit into a sequence collected in Mexico, in the heart of Asclepias linaria territory, and that he [Stevens] would be surprised if the species is part of the native flora of California. [Therefore, a current status of Jepson Flora Project-9 is most appropriate.]
