Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Thomas J. Rosatti see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Asclepias californica Greene subsp. californica and Asclepias californica Greene subsp. greenei Woodson are not to be recognized: Asclepias californica Greene subsp. californica (hoods not elevated above corolla base; SW, D; n Baja CA.) and Asclepias californica Greene subsp. greenei Woodson (hoods elevated above corolla base; c&s SNF, CW) have been recognized elsewhere, and in fact many or most specimens may be assigned easily to one or the other. However, the number of specimens exhibiting morphological intergradation between the two, most of which evidently is not correlated with geography, precludes recognition here. The assertion by Woodson (p.178) that the subspecies have importance "phylogenetically", taken together with the foregoing, suggests that further investigation may be fruitful, or at least interesting.
