Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Luc Brouillet see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Lotus strigosus (Nutt.) Greene is to be treated as a synonym of Acmispon strigosus (Nutt.) Brouillet.
Correspondence 2 18 May 2014 e-mail from Michael G. Simpson see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 is an inquiry about the author citation of Acmispon strigosus and Vicia ludoviciana. [Acmispon strigosus was published by Luc Brouillet in Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas 2(1): 392. 2008, who cited as the basionym "Hosackia strigosa Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray, Fl. N. Amer. 1:326. 1838", which could be shortened to Torr. & A. Gray were it not incorrect. Hosackia strigosa was published by Torrey & A. Gray in A Flora of North America 1(2):219 (1838), who ascribed the name to "Nutt.! mss." and included Nuttall's description in quotes, so that the correct citation of the basionym is Hosackia strigosa Nutt., the author citation of which may be expanded to Nutt. in Torrey & A. Gray. A similar example is addressed in Art. 46, Example 4, of the Melbourne Code (ICBN 2012), "Ex. 4. In Torrey & Gray (1838) the names Calyptridium and C. monandrum were ascribed to "Nutt. mss.", and the descriptions were enclosed in double quotes indicating that Nuttall wrote them, as acknowledged in the preface. The names are therefore cited as Calyptridium Nutt. and C. monandrum Nutt.". The citation in International Plant Names Index is "Acmispon strigosus (Nutt.) D.D.Sokoloff. J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 2(1): 392. 2008 [24 Jul 2008]", which is correct as far as the parenthetical goes, but which is incorrect otherwise. The paper cited in fact is authored by Brouillet; a little searching of other names in Acmispon in IPNI revealed that D. D. Sokoloff published seven new combinations in Acmispon in Ann. Bot. Fennici 37:125-131. 2000, Acmispon strigosus not among them, so unless he published this combination elsewhere (as well as earlier than that made by Brouillet), it is the combination made by Brouillet, with corrected author citation for the basionym, that is the correct name for this taxon. Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 19 May 2014.]
