Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Ed Schilling, plants called Helianthus niveus (Bentham) Brandegee subsp. canescens (A. Gray) Heiser in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] belong within the circumscription of Helianthus petiolaris Nutt. and should be treated at the rank subspecies; that the taxon was first named Helianthus petiolaris Nutt. var. canescens A. Gray, Smithsonian Contr. Knowl. 3(5): 108 (1852); that the combination for this taxon at the rank of subspecies in Helianthus petiolaris Nutt. (as subsp. canescens) evidently has not been made; and that the name Helianthus petiolaris Nutt. var. canescens A. Gray is now used as the folder name for specimens in JEPS and UC belonging to this taxon. [The name to be used for this taxon in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is to be determined by the author of the treatment of Helianthus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]; until such a determination is made, it is appropriate to regard the matter as unresolved, at least with respect to Helianthus petiolaris Nutt. var. canescens A. Gray.]
