Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to the taxonomy in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], Hierochloe hirta (Schrank) Borbás, as well as its nomenclatural synonym Anthoxanthum hirtum (Schrank) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp and it's basionym, Savastana hirta Schrank, should all be treated as synonyms of Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp subsp. nitens, in part because if Anthoxanthum hirtum (Schrank) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp [based on Savastana hirta Schrank, 1789] and Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp [based on Poa nitens Weber, 1787] are considered synonymous, the latter has priority. [Plants referred to Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp subsp. nitens in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] are divided in Flora North America into two taxa, one more widely distributed, evidently including California (the map shows a gray area in northern CA, but the text description excludes CA), Anthoxanthum hirtum (Schrank) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp, and another, Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp subsp. nitens, for which the range in North America is restricted to an area from Labrador to New England, so that if the Flora North America taxonomy were adopted, plants in California would be called Anthoxanthum hirtum (Schrank) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp, and Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y. Schouten & Veldkamp subsp. nitens would be treated as not occurring in CA.]
