Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 18 Feb 2009 e-mails from Steven R. Hill, including forwarded e-mail from Stewart Hinsley see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Stewart Hinsley, M.F.Ray was incorrect when he created the new name Malva linnaei to replace Lavatera cretica, which became necessary after it was decided that the species belonged in Malva (supported by DNA sequence data, morphology, and hybridization experiments) and Malva cretica was not available as it would have been a later homonym of Malva cretica Cav., and that although the matter cannot be resolved conclusively until several types are consulted, the earliest valid name that corresponds unambiguously to Lavatera cretica appears to be Malva pseudolavatera Webb. & Berthel. (1836), which was a nomen novum for Lavatera cretica L., far pre-dates Ray's nom. nov., and has been taken up, for example, by Molero & Montserrat, Nomenclatura de algunas especies del género Malva Linnaeus (Malvaceç), Fontqueria 55(38): 285-292 (2005). Correspondence 1 also indicates that several other names, most evidently not yet published, would be inferior choices at this time; that the Western Australian Herbarium and GRIN have taken up the combination Malva multiflora [(Cav.) Soldano, Banfi, and Galasso], and the Synonymic Index of the Flora of France (Kerguelen, 1999), Valdes et al. (Flora vascular de Andalucía occidental 1: 329. 1987), and Fernandes in Flora Iberica 3: 242 (1993) have recognized Malope multiflora [Cav.] (the basionym) as a synonym of Lavatera cretica; and that Malva linnaei M.F.Ray nom. superfl. can be added as a synonym of Malva pseudolavatera Webb. & Berthel. in Hill's treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Steven R. Hill see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Lavatera cretica L. is to be treated as a synonym of Malva pseudolavatera Webb. & Berthel., as is Malva linnaei M.F.Ray nom. superfl.
