Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms | Grindelia fraxino-pratensis, orth. var.
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Notes on Authorship of Name | both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | spelling of epithet "fraxinopratensis" in Kartesz & Meacham, possibly in accordance with Art. 60.9, ICBN, but hyphenated form retained here after discussions with Paul Silva, who considers the two elements "words that usually stand independently"; however, original spelling in protologue should be retained unless to do so would not be in accordance with ICBN; original spelling of epithet in protologue to be checked.
Variant Spelling | Grindelia fraxinopratensis; Grindelia fraxino-pratensis
Editorial Recommendation | spelling of epithet to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 5 Jan 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that Grindelia fraxino-pratensis (with hyphen) was published by James L. Reveal and Janice C. Beatley (Reveal & Beatley in Authors of Plant Names) in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 98(6): 334-335. 1971 [1972], and that the etymology was explained therein, "From fraxinus (L., noun) = ash + pratensis (L., adj.) = of the meadow". [Therefore, spelling of epithet, with hyphen, retained in this Index.]
Correspondence 2 | 17 Aug 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates: that Greenhouse has reconsidered his earlier communication [Correspondence 1] concerning the orthography of Grindelia fraxino-pratensis; that James L. Reveal and Janice C. Beatley (Reveal & Beatley in Authors of Plant Names) published Grindelia fraxino-pratensis in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 98(6): 334-335. 1971 [1972], explaining the etymology (based on Ash Meadows, the type locality) with, "From fraxinus (L., noun) = ash + pratensis (L., adj.) = of the meadow"; that Art. 60.9 [ICBN; St. Louis Code] would permit the use of a hyphen if the two component words of the compound epithet each would usually stand independently (e.g. fraxinus-pratensis); that, however, the authors chose to use the genitive form of fraxinus, which they should have spelled fraxini, and which would not usually stand independently; and that, therefore, Recommendation 60G.1(a) [ICBN; St. Louis Code] must be followed, yielding "fraxinipratensis" as the correct spelling (in agreement with Flora North America, TROPICOS, and International Plant Names Index). [Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Grindelia fraxinipratensis Reveal & Beatley, from Grindelia fraxino-pratensis Reveal & Beatley previously in this Index, 17 Aug 2007.]
