Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 7 Jan 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates, with respect to spelling of the subspecific epithet: that Dudleya abramsii subsp. costifolia (Bartel & Shevock) Moran has been published by Nancy Morin in J. BRIT 1:1015 (2007), based on Dudleya cymosa subsp. costifolia Bartel & Shevock (Aliso 12:701. 1990); that the original spelling of the epithet by Bartel & Shevock was costafolia, and that this was changed to costifolia by Morin, which may be correct according to ICBN 2006 Rec. 60G.1 (a); that, however, TROPICOS uses costaefolia [correctable to costifolia] whereas International Plant Names Index prefers costatifolia with the remarks: "According to Bartel and Shevock, the subspecific epithet refers to 'rib-like leaves' (costatus = ribbed); therefore, 'costafolia' is corrected to 'costatifolia.'"; and that in the treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] it is spelled costafolia. [With respect to spelling of the subspecific epithet: it is indicated above that according to Bartel and Shevock the epithet means "rib-like leaves", not "ribbed-like leaves", so that "costatifolia" would appear to be incorrect, and Morin's correction of the original spelling, from "costafolia" to "costifolia", indeed does appear to be correct according the ICBN 2006 Rec. 60G.1 (a). [Therefore, spelling of subspecific epithet corrected to Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costifolia Bartel & Shevock, from Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costafolia Bartel & Shevock previously in this Index, 10 Jan 2008.]
Correspondence 2 22 Jan 2008 e-mail from Stephen McCabe (author of Dudleya for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), including e-mails from Nancy Morin and Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 includes the following from Kanchi Gandhi on the subject of spelling of the subspecific epithet in this case: "1) "costafolia" is grammatically incorrect, because, it means "rib leaf" or "leaf rib" (costa, rib; folia, leaf)[;] 2) "costifolia" does not apply here because, it means "leaves of Costus" (a ginger genus)[;] 3) "costaefolia" refers to "ribs' leaf" (not ribbed-leaf or ribular leaf)[;] 4) "costiformifolia" refers to "rib-like leaf", but this is a too drastic correction [even though it is the correct, or most correct, spelling, according to Gandhi elsewhere in his e-mail][;] 5) "costatifolia" refers to ribbed-leaf (close to "rib-like leaf"). Let us use "costatifolia". In Correspondence 2, Gandhi goes on to say that, with respect to the spelling "costatifolia", "Dan Nicolson agreed. The authors agreed. My International Plant Names Index colleagues have no objection. Therefore, let us use: Dudleya abramsii subsp. costatifolia (Bartel & Shevock) Morin[;] Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costatifolia Bartel & Shevock, Aliso 12: 701. 1990 ('costafolia')." Correspondence 2 also indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], Dudleya abramsii Rose subsp. costatifolia (Bartel & Shevock) Morin is to be treated as a synonym of Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costatifolia Bartel & Shevock. [Therefore, spelling of epithet changed to Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costatifolia Bartel & Shevock, from Dudleya cymosa (Lem.) Britton & Rose subsp. costifolia Bartel & Shevock previously in this Index, 23 Jan 2008.]
