Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 6 Sep 2002 e-mail from Dave Keil see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates, without further explanation, that the correct name for Centaurea X pratensis is Centaurea X moncktonii C. E. Britton, citing Stace, C.A. 1991: New Flora of the British Isles. Cambridge, 1226 pp. (description on p. 815). [Centaurea X pratensis is not mentioned in Stace, 1991, or in ed. 2, 1997, but Centaurea X moncktonii C. E. Britton said in both to be hybrid between Centaurea jacea and Centaurea nigra L., the same parents indicated for Centaurea X pratensis in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 2 | 27 Feb 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that: Centaurea X pratensis Thuill. (Flore des Environs de Paris, ed. 2:444. 1799), is a later homonym (and thus illegitimate) of Centaurea pratensis Salisb. (Prodr. stirp. Chap. Allerton, 208. 1796); and that the next epithet available for our plant is moncktonii, published by C. E.Britton as Centaurea moncktonii (Bot. Soc. Exch. Club Brit. Isles 6:172. 1921); and that Dave Keil (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] family editor) has verified that this is the reason for the name change in Correspondence 1.
Correspondence 3 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Centaurea X moncktonii C. E. Britton is to be treated as a synonym of Centaurea jacea L. nothosubsp. pratensis (W.D.J. Koch) Čelak., which is to be treated as naturalized in CA.
