Current Jepson Flora Project Misapplied Names Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees
Initial Editorial Analysis 11 Feb 2010
Source of Report for California Oregon Flora Newsletter 5(3):1, 1999
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 22 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Rubus armeniacus Focke may be the correct name for plants in California currently assigned to Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees (and Rubus procerus P. J. Mueller, listed as synonym of Rubus discolor in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]), the latter two names either invalid or misapplied.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Lawrence A. Alice see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms that Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees was misapplied in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] to plants belonging instead to Rubus armeniacus Focke.
Correspondence 3 6 May 2015 e-mail from Carl Wishner see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 includes reference to treatment of Rubus by Alice et al. in Flora North America Vol. 9, wherein Rubus bifrons Vest is used as the accepted name for this taxon, which is treated as distinct from a species that has been referred to as Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees or Rubus procerus P.J. Muell. ex Boulay, both often considered synonyms of Rubus armeniacus Focke; the treatment in Flora North America also states that until a much needed genetic study is performed on a wide selection of the plants in this group, the precise identities involved will remain elusive, and that Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees is a synonym of Rubus ulmifolius Schott, not of Rubus armeniacus Focke as indicated in this Index and elsewhere.
