Silene coniflora Nees ex Otth

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Silene multinervia S. Watson
Initial Editorial Analysis 19 Jan 2006
Notes on Publication of Name [from Flora North America] Prodr. 1: 371. 1824
Source of Report for California Flora North America (added manually by Rosatti)
Initial Editorial Comments indicated as introduced in California in Flora North America treatment by John K. Morton, wherein it is also stated, "Silene coniflora apparently was introduced into North America in the early days of European exploration and settlement of the Pacific coast. It occurs as a native species from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The report by C. V. Piper (1906) of its occurrence in Washington is based on a specimen of S. conica. I have been unable to confirm the statement by M. E. Peck (1961) that S. multinervia is "sparingly introduced" along the coast of Oregon.". Treated as naturalized in California (native to Asia), with Silene multinervia S. Watson (treated as native to California in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]) listed as syn, in ms submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ron Hartman, Rich Rabeler.
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 20 Apr 2006 e-mail from Jeffrey A. Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Silene coniflora was published in Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis 1:371 (1824), and that in Volume 17 of that work it is indicated that the account for Silene was written by Otth (= Authors of Plant Names), who ascribed the name to "Nees! in litt." [Therefore, author citation corrected to Silene coniflora Nees ex Otth, from Silene coniflora Neex (sic) ex DC. previously in this Index, 24 Apr 2006 (correction also made in entry for Silene multinervia).]
