Notes on Authorship of Name all = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DIST: SCo: Hrusa et al. Current Status: Casual: DOC: Los Angeles Co.: waste ground at intersection of Beach Blvd. (Hwy 39) and Rosecrans Ave, at the Orange County line, La Mirada. Oct. 29, 1988, T. Yutani s.n. (CDA); Solitary small weed in a potted plant purchased at The Farm Store, Cal Poly Pomona. Jan. 10, 2002, A.C. Sanders 24891 (UCR); Riverside Co.: Moreno Valley, weed in untended planter beside Home Depot at Pigeon Pass Rd. and Hwy 160. Nov. 25, 2001, A.C. Sanders 24887 (UCR): NOTES: Determination by S. Mosyakin (KW, Mar. 2001), [= A. blitum subsp. polygonoides (Moq.-Tandon) Carretero]. See Costea et al. (2001) for taxonomic discussion. Occasionally intercepted during nursery stock inspections on material from the US southeast, esp. Florida. Adapted to tropical and subtropical climates, this species would not be expected to be more than a minor or casual weed of greenhouse, garden or nursery. Sometimes treated (and reported) as A. lividus L.
Initial Editorial Comments according to Hrusa et al., in California occurring as a waif, although conditions of cited occurrences do not qualify for inclusion in the flora according to criteria employed by Jepson Flora Project (31 Jan 2003)
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 11 Jul 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that: Amaranthus blitum subsp. emarginatus was published by José Luis Carretero, Felix Muñoz Garmendia, and Joan Pedrol (Carretero, Muñoz Garm., & Pedrol in Authors of Plant Names) in Ann. Jard. Bot. Madrid 44:599 (1987), based on Amaranthus emarginatus published by Edwin B. Uline and William L. Bray (Uline & W.L. Bray in Authors of Plant Names) in Botanical Gazette 19:319 (1894); that Uline and Bray ascribed the name Amaranthus emarginatus to Salzm. but provided their own description; and that references to Salzm. ex Moq. (Prodromus 13(2): 274. 1849) as author of Amaranthus emarginatus are not correct because Moquin only listed Salzmann's unpublished name as a synonym of Euxolus viridis var. polygonoides. [Therefore, author citation expanded to and corrected to Amaranthus blitum L. subsp. emarginatus (Salzm. ex Uline & W. L. Bray) Carretero, Muñoz Garm., & Pedrol, from Amaranthus blitum L. subsp. emarginatus (Uline & Bray) Carretero previously in this Index, 12 Jul 2006.]
