Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 21 Feb 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that S. Galen Smith (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Scirpus), in Flora North America Vol. 23:51 (2003), gives -- as the basionym for Schoenoplectus pungens - Scirpus pungens, published by Martin Vahl (Vahl in Authors of Plant Names) in Enum. Pl. 2:225 (1805). [Author citation corrected to Schoenoplectus pungens (Vahl) Palla, from Schoenoplectus pungens (J. Vahl) Palla originally in this Index, 6 Mar 2003.]
Correspondence 2 27 Jan 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that S. Galen Smith (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Scirpus), in Flora North America 23:51--52 (2002), stated that the varieties were being "described informally and illustrated but not formally recognized because their morphologic delimitation should be evaluated and their exact ranges are still uncertain", and implied that Schoenoplectus pungens (Vahl) Palla var. badius occurs in California only along the coast and slightly inland and that Schoenoplectus pungens (Vahl) Palla var. longispicatus occurs in California away from the coast. [Therefore, it is appropriate to assign a Current Status of tentative 1 until later decision by The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Scirpus americanus Pers. var. longispicatus Britton, treated as a synonym of Scirpus pungens Vahl in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (p. 1148.), and Schoenoplectus pungens Vahl var. badius (J. Presl & C. Presl) S.G. Sm. are to be treated as synonyms of Schoenoplectus pungens (Vahl) Palla var. longispicatus (Britton) S. G. Sm..
