Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21 see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Cladistic analyses of morphological characters by Liede (Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21:31-44) indicate Sarcostemma sensu lato (e.g., Horn) is not monophyletic, but that older, smaller genera (including Sarcostemma, sensu stricto, and Funastrum) are; evidence from the trnL-F spacer region by Liede and Tauber (00 Plant Sys Evol 225:133-140) confirms that Sarcostemma sensu lato is polyphyletic, and supports recognition of Old World taxa in genera including Sarcostemma, and New World taxa in genera including Funastrum, with the result that California taxa treated as Sarcostemma in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] are now treated in Funastrum.
Correspondence 2 11 Jun 2002 pers. comm. from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Krings (2000 Sida 19(1):137-138) indicates that, according to Holm (1950 Ann Mo Bot Gard 37:531), Sarcostemma heterophyllum Torr. is unavailable for use under Sarcostemma cynanchoides [or Funastrum cynanchoides] because its type belongs to Sarcostemma crispum Benth.; he therefore proposes the new combination Funastrum cynanchoides (Decne.) Schltr. var. hartwegii (Vail) Krings. [The combination Funastrum cynanchoides (Decne.) Schltr. subsp. heterophyllum (Engelm. ex Torr.) Kartesz is not specifically addressed by Krings, but its publication is invalid, as also indicated in International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index, because it included neither a clear indication of the basionym nor a full and direct reference to the author and place of valid publication of the basionym. Art. 33.3 of the St. Louis Code states "A new combination, or an avowed substitute (replacement name, nomen novum), published on or after 1 Jan 1953 based on a previously and validly published name is not validly published unless its basionym (name-bringing or epithet-bringing synonym) or the replaced synonym (when a new name is proposed) is clearly indicated and a full and direct reference given to its author and place of valid publication, with page or plate reference and date (but see Art. 33.2, 33.4, and 33.6)..]
