Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Argyranthemum frutescens (L.) Sch. Bip.
ASTERACEAE
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Chrysanthemum frutescens L.
Initial Editorial Analysis 4 Jan 2011
Source of Report for California Rosatti
Initial Editorial Comments from annotated comp treatments in Rosatti file, UC1528948 (sea bluff, La Jolla; said in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] to be widely cult; no record in SMASCH) determined by Strother, Rosatti, to be Argyranthemum frutescens, although Elizabeth McClintock (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author) says it is definitely Argyranthemum foeniculaceum; not mentioned but evidently treated as Chrysanthemum frutescens in Kartesz & Meacham; see Chrysanthemum frutescens; if added, evidently would be as Argyranthemum frutescens (L.) Sch. Bip.; indicated at end of genus description of Argyranthemum in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] to be widely cultivated.
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 May 2008 e-mail from Bruce G. Baldwin, including forwarded e-mail from John L. Strother see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Bruce G. Baldwin, author of Argyranthemum for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], is in agreement with John Strother, who has stated that UC1528948, identified and annotated as Argyranthemum frutescens (L.) Schultz-Bip. in Webb. & Berthel by Strother in 1987, was annotated and filed as Argyranthemum foeniculaceus (Willdenow) Webb ex Schultz Bip. by Strother on 19 May 2008, and who also suspects that SD120698 [according to Baldwin, a different accession from the same collection], reported as Argyranthemum frutescens in the Consortium of California Herbaria database, belongs to the same species as UC1528948, which if true would mean that Argyranthemum frutescens is not known to be established in flora of California, so that the taxon will not be included in Baldwin's treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].
