Centaurea moschata L.
ASTERACEAE
Initial Editorial Analysis 26 Feb 2007
Source of Report for California
a The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (added manually by Rosatti)
b Hrusa et al., ms later published in Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DISTRIBUTION: SCo.; STATUS: unknown.
Initial Editorial Comments may be a waif in California according to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; evidently in no way mentioned in Kartesz & Meacham
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 5 Sep 2002 e-mail from Dave Keil see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates treatment of Centaurea moschata as a synonym of Amberboa moschata (L.) DC. [Jun 2000 pers. comm. from John L. Strother, under Amberboa moschata, indicates treatment of Amberboa moschata (L.) DC. as a synonym of Centaurea moschata.]
Correspondence 2 5 Sep 2002 e-mail from David Keil see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that David Keil, co-author of Centaurea in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], now recognizes Amberboa as distinct from Centaurea, so that he now recognizes Centaurea moschata L. as Amberboa moschata (L.) DC., citing Susanna, A., N. G. Jacas, D. E. Soltis, and P. S. Soltis. 1995. Phylogenetic relationships in tribe Cardueae (Asteraceae) based on ITS sequences. Amer. J. Bot. 82: 10561068. [Therefore, this is now a synonym for a taxon treated as a possible waif in California in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 3 12 Feb 2007 e-mail from David J. Keil to Margriet Wetherwax, including comments on numerous genera to be submitted by Keil for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to David J. Keil (Author of genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), Amberboa moschata (L.) DC. (Centaurea moschata L.) should be treated either as cultivated only or as a waif, escaped from cultivation, and that there are no consortium records.
