Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Sedum obtusatum A. Gray subsp. retusum (Rose) R. T. Clausen; Sedum obtusatum A. Gray var. retusum (Rose) H. Ohba
Initial Editorial Analysis 18 May 2022
Notes on Authorship of Name = Authors of Plant Names
Notes on Publication of Name Nat. Pflanz. ed 2. 18a:451. 1930
Source of Report for California Rosatti SMASCH notes: Taxon evidently not treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, Berger (Ernst Friedrich Berber) in Gray Card Index (A. Berger = Alwin Berger, 1871-1931, in Authors of Plant Names); evidently not treated in Kartesz & Meacham; in no way mentioned in Abrams & Ferris, Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States, Munz, Munz Supplement, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 27 Mar 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Sedum sanhedrinum was published by A. Berger (= Authors of Plant Names) in Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien, Zweite Auflage 18a: 451 (1930). [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 4 Apr 2008.]
Correspondence 2 7 Apr 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates [in response to query from Editor of this Index] that only "A. Berger" is indicated, consistently, in Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien, Zweite Auflage 18a: 451 (1930), the protolog for Sedum sanhedrinum, but that Alwin Berger [A. Berger, 1871-1931 in Authors of Plant Names] is the recognized author of Sedum in that work and he is the only spermatophyte author in Authors of Plant Names named Berger who was alive in 1930 [and thus confirming identity of A. Berger].
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Steve Boyd see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Sedum sanhedrinum A. Berger is to be treated as a synonym of Sedum obtusatum A. Gray subsp. retusum (Rose) R. T. Clausen.
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for Revision 10 of the Jepson eFlora see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that Sedum obtusatum A. Gray subsp. retusum (Rose) R. T. Clausen, and so also Sedum obtusatum A. Gray var. retusum (Rose) H. Ohba, is to be treated as a synonym of Sedum sanhedrinum A. Berger (use of "retusum" at species level precluded by Sedum retusum Hemsley).
