Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 29 Jul 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that the basionym of Allium abramsii, Allium fimbriatum var. abramsii, was published in Plant Life 28:64 (1972), a journal co-edited by Hamilton P. Traub, in an article for which no author was indicated, but in which the name Allium fimbriatum var. abramsii was followed by "Ownbey & Aase, var. nov.; Allium fimbriatum var. abramsii Ownbey & Aase, in Munz & Keck, Calif. Flora, p.1376. 1959, anglice", in addition to a complete Latin description; that this constitutes valid publication of the name, since the description appearing in 1959 was in English, not Latin, and therefore was not valid according to ICBN, Art. 36.1, which states, "On or after 1 January 1935 a name of a new taxon (algal and all fossil taxa excepted) must, in order to be validly published, be accompanied by a Latin description or diagnosis or by a reference to a previously and effectively published Latin description or diagnosis..."; and that, therefore, the correct author citation for the basionym is Allium fimbriatum var. abramsii Ownbey & Aase (1972). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Allium abramsii (Ownbey & Aase) McNeal, from Allium abramsii (Traub) McNeal previously in this Index, 30 Sep 2004.]
Correspondence 2 | 9 Feb 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Dale McNeal (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author), there is no doubt that Traub was the author of 11 names or combinations in Allium that were validly published in Plant Life 28:63--64 (1972), so that the correct author citation for this name is Allium abramsii (Ownbey & Aase ex Traub) McNeal. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Allium abramsii (Ownbey & Aase ex Traub) McNeal, from Allium abramsii (Ownbey & Aase) McNeal previously in this Index, 11 Feb 2005.]
