Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 5 Nov 2010 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that Phacelia hispida A. Gray is a later homonym of Phacelia hispida Buckl., and therefore illegitimate; that J.T. Howell considered Gray's Phacelia hispida to be a variety of Phacelia cicutaria and published the name Phacelia cicutaria var. hispida for it; and that according to ICBN [2006], Article 58, Howell's name is to be treated as new, so that the citation should be Phacelia cicutaria Greene var. hispida J. T. Howell, leaving out A. Gray as the parenthetical author. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Phacelia cicutaria Greene var. hispida J. T. Howell, from Phacelia cicutaria Greene var. hispida (A. Gray) J. T. Howell previously in this Index, 3 Dec 2010.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted after The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Genevieve K. Walden see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, whereas Phacelia hispida A. Gray (1878) is a later homonym of Phacelia hispida Buckl. (1861) and therefore illegitimate, as stated in Correspondence 1, this fact is of no consequence in this case because Phacelia cicutaria Green var. hispida ( A.Gray ) J.T. Howell (1942) was not based by Howell on Phacelia hispida A. Gray (1878), but rather on "P. ramosissima Dougl. var. hispida Gray, Proc. Amer. Acad. 10:319 (1875)", which is not a later homonym of anything (as far as is known) and is legitimate. [To qualify as homonyms, two names must be at the same rank. Therefore, author citation corrected (back) to Phacelia cicutaria Greene var. hispida (A. Gray) J. T. Howell, from Phacelia cicutaria Greene var. hispida J. T. Howell previously (and incorrectly) in this Index, 16 Nov 2012.]
