Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 31 Mar 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that the combination Agoseris apargioides var. maritima was published by Gary I. Baird (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author; G. I. Baird according to principles in Authors of Plant Names) in SIDA 21:716 (2004), based on Agoseris maritima published by Edmund P. Sheldon (E. Sheld. in Authors of Plant Names) in Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 30:310-311 (1903); that [based on the author citation given in Kartesz & Meacham] Kartesz & Meacham obviously intended to list Agoseris apargioides subsp. [not var.] maritima, a combination published by Quentin Jones (Q. Jones in Authors of Plant Names) in Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest 5:24 (1955); that Q. Jones is in fact the author of the combination Agoseris apargioides subsp. maritima because the author of the Compositae (Asteraceae) in that work, Arthur Cronquist, acknowledged receiving special assistance on Agoseris from him and, in fact, ascribed the new combination to "Q. Jones hoc loc." which indicates it is being made there and then; and that ICBN Art. 46.2 states in part "A new combination or a nomen novum must be attributed to the author or authors to whom it was ascribed when, in the publication in which it appears, it is explicitly stated that they contributed in some way to that publication. [Therefore, entry for Agoseris apargioides (Less.) Greene var. maritima (E. Sheld.) G. I. Baird added to this Index 31 Mar 2005.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Agoseris apargioides (Less.) Greene var. maritima (E. Sheld.) G. I. Baird is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
Correspondence 3 8 Aug 2012 e-mail from John L. Strother, including forwarded e-mail from Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Kanchi Gandhi, Agoseris apargioides var. maritima was in fact published before 2004 by G. I. Baird, in 1955 by Cronquist (Vasc. Pl. Pacific NW 5:24). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Agoseris apargioides (Less.) Greene var. maritima (E. Sheld.) Cronquist, from Agoseris apargioides (Less.) Greene var. maritima (E. Sheld.) G. I. Baird previously in this Index, 9 Aug 2012.]
