Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 22 Aug 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Populus balsamifera subsp. trichocarpa was published by T.C. Brayshaw (Brayshaw in Authors of Plant Names) in Canadian Field-Naturalist 7995 (1965), based on Populus trichocarpa published by William Jackson Hooker (Hook. in Authors of Plant Names) in Icones Plantarum 9:t. 878 (1852), wherein Hooker ascribed the name to "Torr. et Gray, MS." but provided his own validating description. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Populus balsamifera L. subsp. trichocarpa (Torr. & A. Gray ex Hook.) Brayshaw, from Populus balsamifera L. subsp. trichocarpa (Torr. & A. Gray) Brayshaw previously in this Index, 24 Aug 2005.]
Correspondence 2 13 Jul 2007 e-mail from Dan Luoma, Dept. of Forest Science, Oregon State University see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 is a reference to papers including Cervera et al., 2005, Theor Appl Genet 111:1440-1456, wherein it is concluded, based on phylogenetic analysis and AFLP markers, that Populus trichocarpa and Populus balsamifera "should be treated as separate species."
Correspondence 3 17 Jul 2007 e-mail from John Sawyer (author of Populus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), in response to query from Editor of this Index regarding Correspondence 2 see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates, based on consideration of Cervera et al., 2005, Theor Appl Genet 111:1440-1456, that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Populus trichocarpa and Populus balsamifera are to be treated as separate species.
