Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, (Raf.) H. M. Hall according to Kartesz.
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Jun 2000 pers. comm. from John L. Strother see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates author citation to be Stephanomeria tenuifolia (Torr.) H. M. Hall.
Correspondence 2 7 Feb 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that: Stephanomeria tenuifolia was published by Harvey Monroe Hall (H.M. Hall in Authors of Plant Names) in University of California Publications in Botany 3(1): 256. 1907, wherein he listed Prenanthes? tenuifolia Torr., Ann. Lyc. N. Y. ii. 210 (1828), and Ptiloria tenuifolia Raf., Atl. Journ. 145 (1832), as synonyms; that the earlier name, Prenanthes tenuifolia Torr., was illegitimate, being a later homonym of Prenanthes tenuifolia L. (Sp. Pl. 2:797. 1753), and therefore cannot serve as basionym; that the later Rafinesque (Raf. in Authors of Plant Names) publication of Ptiloria tenuifolia was based on Torrey's combination; that, according to ICBN (2000) Art. 58, the epithet of an illegitimate name can be used in a nomen novum with the same type; that the Rafinesque name therefore is legitimate and must be treated as new (Ptiloria tenuifolia Raf.); that Ptiloria tenuifolia Raf. therefore serves as basionym for Hall's combination, so that the correct author citation is Stephanomeria tenuifolia (Raf.) H. M. Hall; and that John L. Strother (pers. comm. 2/2006) as well as Leslie Gottlieb (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] and Flora North America author) now agree with this conclusion. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Stephanomeria tenuifolia (Raf.) H. M. Hall, from Stephanomeria tenuifolia (Torr.) H. M. Hall previously in this Index, 9 Feb 2006.]
