Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Notes on Authorship of Name | both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | not in Gray Card Index; originally epithet spelled "bocconii" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], as proposed in Kartesz & Meacham below; in Authors of Plant Names there is Paolo Silvio Boccone, and no one named Boccon; if epithet based on Boccone, as seems likely, epithet would be spelled "bocconei", as cited
Variant Spelling | Spergularia bocconii, Spergularia bocconei
Editorial Recommendation | spelling of epithet to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 1 May 2006 e-mail from Jeffrey A. Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that Ronald L. Hartman and Richard K. Rabeler (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] and Flora North America Co-Authors), in Flora North America 5:20 (2005), explain their choice of Spergularia bocconi for the spelling of the name: "The spelling of the epithet bocconi, often "corrected" to bocconii, is debatable. It commemorates Paolo Boccone, suggesting a correction to bocconei, but he also used the Latinized form Bocconus, allowing bocconi [under Recommendation 60C.2., ICBN, 2000]. We have used bocconi, following the first usage by Scheele." [Therefore, spelling of epithet changed to Spergularia bocconi (Scheele) Merino, from Spergularia bocconei (Scheele) Merino previously in this Index, 2 May 2006.]
Correspondence 2 | 31 May 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that the publication of Spergularia bocconi by R. P. Merino (Mem. Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 2(9): 496. 1904.) was not valid in that it lacked a description or diagnosis, and that P. Graebner (Graebn. in Authors of Plant Names), in Synopsis der Mitteleuropæischen Flora 5:849 (1919), published Spergularia bocconi based on Alsine bocconi Scheele (Flora oder allgemeine botanische zeitung 26:431. 1843) [Scheele in Authors of Plant Names]. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Spergularia bocconi (Scheele) Graebn., from Spergularia bocconi (Scheele) Merino previously in this Index, 12 Jun 2006.]
