Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Silene pendula L.
CARYOPHYLLACEAE
Initial Editorial Analysis 24 May 2007
Source of Report for California Flora North America (added manually by Rosatti)
Initial Editorial Comments indicated as introduced in California in Flora North America treatment by John K. Morton, wherein it is also stated, "Silene pendula is an attractive, rarely escaping and persisting garden plant readily recognized by its beautiful pink flowers, straggling leafy stems, raceme-like inflorescences with axillary flowers, and the obovoid, papery, strongly veined calyx that is constricted below the middle. It is occasionally used in seeding roadsides.". Recognized as naturalized in California in ms submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ron Hartman, Rich Rabeler.
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ronald L. Hartman & Richard Rabeler see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Silene pendula L. is to be treated as a waif in CA, primarily on the basis of Morton's statement in Flora North America (2005. 5: 198) that what is represented is a "rarely escaping and persisting garden plant" and despite the fact the only known collection in California (CAS) was made in 1894 from a quarry in Golden Gate Park.
