Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, Nutt. in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 7 Oct 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Rhus trilobata was published in Torrey & A. Gray, 1838--1840, A Flora of North America 1:219, where both the name and validating diagnosis were ascribed to Nuttall. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Rhus trilobata Nutt., from Rhus trilobata Torr. & A. Gray previously in this Index, 7 Oct 2004.]
Correspondence 2 18 Mar 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Rhus trilobata var. malacophylla (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym) was published by Munz in Manual of Southern California Botany 293 (1935), based on Schmaltzia malacophylla Greene (Leaflets of botanical observation and criticism 1(10):138-139. 1905). [Therefore, author citation of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected to Rhus trilobata var. malacophylla (Greene) Munz , from Rhus trilobata var. malacophylla (Greene) Jeps. previously in this Index, 19 Mar 2008.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by John M. Miller see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Rhus trilobata Nutt., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. anisophylla (Greene) Jeps., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. quinata Jeps., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. simplicifolia (Greene) F. A. Barkley, Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. trilobata, and others are to be treated as synonyms of Rhus aromatica Aiton.
Correspondence 4 11 Feb 2014 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin (attachment) see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that, based on molecular, phylogenetic evidence (Yi et al. 2007 Syst. Bot. 32(2)379-391), Baldwin thinks that Rhus trilobata Nutt. (1838) should still be used [it had been used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]] for western skunkbrush, instead of Rhus aromatica Aiton (1789) [which was used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]], although it does constitute a clade with Rhus aromatica, so that the treatment in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is not completely indefensible.
Pending data Rhus trilobata Nutt. may become the accepted name for Rhus aromatica Aiton
