Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Synonyms Cited in The Jepson Manual Quercus dunnii Kellogg
Initial Editorial Analysis 13 Mar 2002
Notes on Publication of Name [from International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis] Trans. Acad. Sc. St. Louis, iii. (1878) 393; according to Editorial Comments 2, the correct citation is Bot. Calif. 2:97. 1880, and Trans. Acad. Sc. St. Louis, iii. (1878) 393 is the protologue for Quercus chrysolepis subsp. palmeri.
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments see comments under Quercus dunnii, possibly an earlier name for this taxon; author citation uncertain, both Quercus palmeri Engelm. in S. Watson and Quercus palmeri Engelm. ex S. Watson in International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index
Editorial Recommendation precise dates of publication of competing names to be determined [resolved]; author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 18 Feb 2002 e-mail from Christopher Thayer see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Christopher Thayer [no specimens cited, but possibly to be submitted later], Quercus palmeri Engelm. occurs in Garin Woods (SnFrB), so that distribution would be corrected from what is in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] to include SnFrB.
Correspondence 2 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Quercus dunnii was stated by Kellogg in the [would be] protologue (1879) to be provisional, so it was not validly published and therefore is illegitimate; that a later attempt by Curran (1885) to correct the situation failed because Curran cited as a synonym the earlier (1880), legitimate name Quercus palmeri, rendering his name, Quercus dunnii Kellogg ex Curran, superfluous and therefore illegitimate; and that Quercus palmeri was published by Engelm. in S. Watson et al., so that the correct citation is Quercus palmeri Engelm., just as it is in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]. [Engelm. published Quercus palmeri, as a species, in S. Watson, Bot. Calif. 2:97, 1880, citing "Q. chrysolepis, var. Palmeri, Engelm. l. c. 383", the l. c. referring to "Trans. St. Louis Acad. iii". On page 393 of this paper (not p. 383, as indicated in Bot. Calif. 2:97; although Quercus chrysolepis is discussed on p. 383, nothing is said on that page of Quercus palmeri), "Oaks of the United States", under Quercus chrysolepis, Engelm. states, "...Another extreme and somewhat aberrant subspecies I name for it discoverer Q. Palmeri", for which he then provides a complete description. This situation is covered by Art. 24.4, as illustrated by Ex. 4 and Ex. 5, of ICBN (00), which means that Engelm. published Quercus chrysolepis subsp. palmeri Engelm. in this place, at this time (Trans. Acad. St. Louis iii. 393. 1878; UCB BioSci QK45.E59). The correct citation for later publication of the species name then is Quercus palmeri (Engelm.) Engelm. in S. Watson (Bot. Calif. 2:97. 1880), abbreviated to Quercus palmeri (Engelm.) Engelm., corrected from Quercus palmeri Engelm. originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 3 30 Jul 2002 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that 3 specimens documenting occurrence in Alameda Co. have been submitted but not yet accessioned into UC/JEPS, so that range is to be expanded to include SnFrB (Alameda Co.).
