Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 25 Nov 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that this name was published by Elmer I. Applegate (Applegate in Authors of Plant Names) in Am. Midl. Nat. 19:364 (1938), two years before Keck's publication [of the same name] in Madroño 5:169 (1940); that Applegate's citation (in the protologue) of Madia gracilis (Smith) Keck & Clausen (D. D. Keck & J. C. Clausen in Authors of Plant Names) constitutes ascription to Keck & Clausen (who in fact had not published the combination by that time), even though Applegate did not discuss their involvement or why he cited them; and that John Strother (pers. comm. to Greenhouse, 25 Nov 2003) agrees that Applegate's reference to the basionym, "(Smith)", although tenuous, was sufficient in 1938 to establish valid publication of Madia gracilis as a new name. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Madia gracilis (Sm.) D. D. Keck & J. C. Clausen ex Applegate, from Madia gracilis (Sm.) D. D. Keck previously in this Index, 5 Dec 2003.]
