Variant Spelling Physalis lancifolia
Editorial Recommendation spelling of epithet to be checked [checked but still unresolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 24 Dec 2002 e-mail from Dick Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that spelling of the epithet in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], "lancifolia", probably is incorrect, and that the spelling "lanceifolia", as used in Kartesz & Meacham, is probably correct. In the protologue by Nees, (Linnaea 6: 473), the spelling is "lanceifolia", but there is no direct indication that the leaves resemble those of Lancea; if there were such an indication, his intention would be clear and the correct spelling would be "lanceifolia" (Nees does not capitalize epithets based on generic names, at least elsewhere in this work, so the use of lower case for "lanceifolia" reveals nothing about his intentions in this case). Furthermore, the leaves are lanceolate, so that Nees' intention could have been to indicate leaf shape with the epithet, in which case the correct spelling would be "lancifolia". Another, unrelated issue is that Physalis lanceifolia (so spelled) was treated as a synonym of Physalis angulata by Brako, L. & J. L. Zarucchi (Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Gymnosperms of Peru; Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical Garden Collation: 45: i--xl, 1-1286. 1993). [The epithet would be "lancifolia" if the intention were to indicate that the leaves were lanceolate, but "lanceifolia" if reference to the leaves of Lancea were intended. Until this issue of intent is decided, the correct spelling of the epithet remains uncertain. Whether or not the taxon merits taxonomic recognition also remains in question.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Michael Nee see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Physalis lancifolia Nees is to be recognized and treated as naturalized in CA, with Physalis angulata L. var. lancifolia (Nees) Waterf. as a syn, but without further relevant discussion.
Correspondence 3 10 Sep 2018 e-mail from David J. Keil to Kanchi Gandhi at ipnifeedback@ipni.org see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 asks for Gandhi's opinion on the matter discussed under Editorial Comments 1, pointing out that because Lancea was published in 1857, Nees could not have been alluding to the leaves of Lancea when he published Physalis lanceifolia in 1831.
Correspondence 4 10 Sep 2018 e-mail from Kanchi Gandhi to David J. Keil and others see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that there are at least 90 records in International Plant Names Index of the form "lanceifol-" or "lanceiflor", many of which were published before the genus Lancea was published in 1857, which in Gandhi's opinion indicates that "lance-" in fact can serve as the stem of an epithet (even though "lanc-" and/or "lanci-" may be preferred), so that the name should be retained as originally published. [Because of Gandhi's relationship to IPNI, it is likely that most or all users will adopt his opinion on this matter, therefore spelling of epithet changed to Physalis lanceifolia Nees, from Physalis lancifolia Nees previously in this Index, 11 Sep 2018.]
