Panicum miliaceum L.

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 30 Aug 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Robert W. Freckmann and Michel G. Lelong, in Flora North America 25:456-457 (2003), recognize subspecies in Panicum miliaceum, stating that "Panicum miliaceum subsp. miliaceum is the subspecies used in birdseed. It probably rarely persists because of the retention of the upper florets on the plant and, in northern states, poor seed survival over winter.", and reporting that Panicum miliaceum subsp. ruderale (Kitag.) Tzvelev "is now naturalized over much of the flora region. It may become a major weed, especially in corn fields." [Therefore, plants naturalized in California evidently belong to Panicum miliaceum subsp. ruderale (Kitag.) Tzvelev.]
