Initial Editorial Comments spelling of epithet uncertain, "americanus" in Kartesz & Meacham; originally published as "Lysichitum americanum" by Hultén & H. St. John (not E. P. St. John as originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], there as "St. John", which is E. P. St. John in the Kew Draft Index), H. St. John and Hultén later (Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 83(2):151-153. 1956) accepted "Lysichiton" as the correct spelling of the generic name (instead of "Lysichitum"), essentially because Schott, its author, had used that spelling in the last two of his four publications on the genus, after having used both spellings in the first two, including the protologue (and not for reasons given earlier, by Huttleston, in Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 82:134. 1955). Therefore, spelling of the epithet is here corrected to "americanus", from "americanum" originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], in order for it to agree grammatically with the generic name, which is masculine. It should be noted that Lysichiton is sometimes treated as neuter (e.g., Lysichiton americanum, Lysichiton camtschatcense), as in Hortus Third, and that Hultén & H. St. John used Lysichitum camtschatcense (neuter form of epithet) at least twice in the protologue.
Variant Spelling Lysichiton americanum
