| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that confusion over the identification of the specimen cited [in the protologue of Ludwigia repens] by Forster led Raven (Rhodora 67:83. 1965) to believe that Ludwigia repens was an earlier name for Ludwigia natans, with the result that Ludwigia repens came into widespread use. Then, the specimen cited by Forster was determined to be Ludwigia palustris, which meant, according to ICBN, that Ludwigia repens would be placed in synonymy under Ludwigia palustris, and the name Ludwigia natans would be used instead for the taxon widely known as Ludwigia repens. A proposal to conserve (Proposal 1603) the name Ludwigia repens over Ludwigia natans and designate an appropriate type, published by Reveal et al. in Taxon 51:864--865 (2003), awaits action by a future International Botanical Congress. [The name Ludwigia repens will be retained for this species at least until such action is taken.] | |||||
