ORCHIDACEAE
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, (Sw.) Nutt. ex Ell. (identity of Ell. uncertain) in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 16 Jul 2003 e-mail from Dan Post see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates author difference in Flora North America, which has Listera convallariodes (Swartz) Elliot, Sketch Bot. S. Carolina 2: 494. 1823 [therefore, author citation needs to be checked]
Correspondence 2 13 Jan 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the publishing author for Listera convallarioides was Stephen Elliott (Elliott in Authors of Plant Names) in A Sketch of the Botany of South-Carolina and Georgia 2:494--495 (1823); that Elliott ascribed the combination to Nuttall (Nutt. in Authors of Plant Names) and, incidentally, supplied his own description; and that Elliott specified the basionym as Epipactis convallarioides, with a reference that can be traced back to Olof Swartz (Sw. in Authors of Plant Names) in Kongl. Vetenskaps Academiens Nya Handlinger 21:232 (1800). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Listera convallarioides (Sw.) Nutt. ex Elliott, from Listera convallarioides (Sw.) Nutt. previously in this Index, 14 Jan 2005.]
Correspondence 3 25 Aug 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that Greenhouse consulted the Nuttall (Nutt. in Authors of Plant Names) reference in the International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis record for Listera convallarioides (Genera Florae Americae Boreali-Orientalis Illustrata 2:191. 1818), which predates the Elliott publication, and found that Nuttall satisfactorily made the combination and did provide an indirect reference to Epipactis convallarioides Sw., which serves as the basionym.[Therefore, author citation corrected (back) to Listera convallarioides (Sw.) Nutt., from Listera convallarioides (Sw.) Nutt. ex Elliott previously in this Index, 10 Sep 2008.]
