Initial Editorial Analysis 21 Apr 2011
Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 29 Aug 2006 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax, including forwarded e-mail from Fred Hrusa, comments on his ms dealing with alien species addressed neither in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] nor in Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002 see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Juncus gerardii seems to Hrusa to be fully naturalized in CA.
Correspondence 2 13 Jan 2014 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded e-mail from from Peter Zika, author of Juncus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Kanchi Gandhi (via Peter Zika), the spelling of this epithet has been changed in International Plant Names Index from "gerardii" to "gerardi", for reasons not given other than to say "gerardi" is the original spelling.
Correspondence 3 14 Jan 2014 e-mail from John Strother (in response to verbal inquiry made by the editor of this Index), including forwarded e-mail of 15 Nov 2013 from Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Kanchi Gandhi, the name originally published as Andropogon gerardi Vitman is not to be corrected [for example, to Andropogon gerardii were this a substantival epithet honoring a male, according to ICBN (Melbourne Code), Rec. 60C.1.b.] because "the given name Gerard or Gérard, dating to the Early Middle Ages, has a well-established Latinized form and is not correctable under Melbourne IC[B]N Art. 60.12." [In fact, according to the protologue, the name in question here was published as "Juncus gerardi", for someone named "M. Gérard". Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to "gerardi", from "gerardii" previously in this Index, 14 January 2014.]
