Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 8 Sep 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that TROPICOS and International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis give Max Joseph Roemer (M. Roem. in Authors of Plant Names) as the author of Heteromeles arbutifolia (in Fam. Nat. Synonym Monogr. 3:105. 1847). [Author citation corrected to Heteromeles arbutifolia (Lindl.) M. Roem., from Heteromeles arbutifolia (Lindl.) Roemer originally in this Index, 23 Sep 2003]
Correspondence 2 xx xxx 2006 e-mail from James Phipps (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author) to Barbara Ertter see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to James Phipps (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author), the basionym [for Heteromeles arbutifolia (Lindl.) M. Roem.] is Aiton's Crataegus arbutifolia of 1811, which is a [later] homonym of Lamarck's Crataegus arbutifolia of 1783 [and therefore illegitimate], and goes on to state that Abrams was correct in 1910 when he published the combination Heteromeles salicifolia based on [C.] Presl's Photinia salicifolia of 1849 [so that the correct name of this taxon would be Heteromeles salicifolia (C. Presl) Abrams.]
Correspondence 3 23 Feb 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that Crataegus arbutifolia W.T. Aiton 1811 is a later homonym of Crataegus arbutifolia Lam. 1783 [and therefore is illegitimate] and therefore cannot serve as basionym for Heteromeles arbutifolia M. Roem. (Familiarum Naturalium Regni Vegetabilis Monographicae 3: 105. 1847), but goes on to indicate that Roemer also cited [in publishing Heteromeles arbutifolia M. Roem.] Photinia arbutifolia Lindl. (Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, Botany 13: 103. 1822) as a synonym, which predates Photinia salicifolia C. Presl 1851 and [may and] does serve as a basionym. Correspondence 3 also states that Lindley appears to have based Photinia arbutifolia on Crataegus arbutifolia W. T. Aiton, which would have invalidated his name were it not for the fact that he provided a diagnosis of the species, so that his action is sufficient for valid publication of Photinia arbutifolia Lindl. as a nomen novum (permitted by ICBN, 2000, Art. 58.1, which states, in part, "The epithet in an illegitimate name if available may be used in a different combination..."), replacing Crataegus arbutifolia W. T. Aiton. Correspondence 3 concludes that Photinia arbutifolia Lindl. serves as the basionym for Heteromeles arbutifolia (Lindl.) M. Roem., and that Heteromeles salicifolia (C. Presl) Abrams is a synonym.
