Bartram is the correct name for what has been called Heracleum lanatum Michx.; that Heracleum maximum was published by William Bartram (W. Bartram in Authors of Plant Names) in Travels through North & South Carolina, ...: 344 (1791), which predates Heracleum lanatum Michx. by 12 years but was long overlooked; that H. W. Rickett, in Rhodora 46:389--391 (1944), questioned the legitimacy of names in Bartram's work because of inconsistency in Bartram's use of the Linnaean binomial system; that E. D. Merrill, in Bartonia 23:10--35 (1945), made a strong argument in support of Bartram's names based on Bartram's clear intent to use binomials; and that John Strother (personal communication) and Kartesz & Meacham accept the validity of Bartram's names. [Therefore, Heracleum maximum W. Bartram is the correct name for what has been called Heracleum lanatum Michx.] | |||||
