Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Geranium pilosum Sol. ex Willd., nom. illeg., non Cav. (1788) [see Correspondence 4]

Notes on Authorship of Name = Authors of Plant Names
Notes on Publication of Name 1965
Source of Report for California Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments not in Munz, Munz Supplement indices, evidently not in text either (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation); indicated only for California in Kartesz & Meacham; Geranium pilosum Willd. listed as synonym of Geranium solanderi in International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis; Geranium pilosum Forst. f. treated in Munz, listed as synonym of Geranium potentilloides in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 6 Apr 2000 e-mail from Barbara Ertter see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates specimens previously identified as Geranium solanderi now filed as Geranium potentilloides.
Correspondence 2 6 Sep 2001 e-mail from Barbara Ertter see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates Carlos Aedo, who is contributing the treatment of Geranium for Flora North America [and may be new contributor of Geranium for Jepson Flora Project], recognizes Geranium solanderi and Geranium potentilloides as separate taxa, and has annotated specimens of both in UC [including, presumably, specimens of both from CA].
Correspondence 3 2002 pers. comm. from Barbara Ertter see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 indicated as naturalized in California in Aedo, 2001, The Genus Geranium in North America II. Perennial species (Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 59(1):3-65).
Correspondence 4 5 Dec 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that, according to Carlos Aedo, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author: Geranium pilosum Sol. (1786) is a nom. nud.; Geranium pilosum Sol. ex Willd. (1801) is illegitimate, being a later homonym of Geranium pilosum Cav. (1788), which applies to a different taxon; and Geranium pilosum Sol. ex Willd. is a synonym of Geranium solanderi instead of Geranium potentilloides. [Therefore, Geranium pilosum Sol. ex Willd., nom. illeg., non Cav. (1788), listed as a current Jepson Flora Project synonym of Geranium solanderi Carolin; also, Current Status of Geranium solanderi Carolin no longer tentative with identification of Aedo as The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author, based on Correspondence 3.]
Correspondence 5 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Carlos Aedo see Comment 5
Editorial Comments 5 Correspondence 5 indicates that for Jepson Flora Project Geranium potentilloides and Geranium solanderi are to be treated as separate species, and that Geranium solanderi is to be treated as naturalized in CA.
