Initial Editorial Comments in no way mentioned in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; = Geranium anemonifolium in International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis; Geranium anemonifolium listed as synonym of Geranium palmatum in Kartesz & Meacham
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 6 Sep 2001 e-mail from Barbara Ertter see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates, based on determinations by Carlos Aedo, contributor of Geranium to Flora North America [and possibly contributor of genus to Jepson Flora Project], that Geranium palmatum may be the name to be used for some or all plants treated as Geranium anemonifolium in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence 2 7 Sep 2001 e-mail from Barbara Ertter (including e-mail from Carlos Aedo) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Carlos Aedo, contributor of Geranium to Flora North America [and possibly contributor of genus to Jepson Flora Project], Geranium anemonifolium (1789) includes the type of and therefore is a nomenclatural synonym of Geranium palmatum (1787).
Correspondence 3 2002 pers. comm. from Barbara Ertter see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 indicated for California in Aedo, 2001, The Genus Geranium in North America II. Perennial species (Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 59(1):3-65), but the only specimen cited (McClintock s.n., JEPS) is from "Golden Gate Park, road above de Laveaga Dell...1990", an occurrence not considered naturalized by Jepson Flora Project criteria.
Correspondence 4 3 Oct 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates: that Carlos Aedo (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author), in a 31 Aug 2005 e-mail, confirms that the name Geranium anemonifolium L'Hér. ex Aiton (Hortus Kewensis 2:432. 1789) is illegitimate; that Aiton cited "L'Herit. n. 6 tab. 36" with his description and gave Geranium palmatum Cav. (1787) as a synonym; that the L'Hér. citation refers to text which was unpublished at the time; and that Geranium palmatum, cited as a synonym, has priority, thus rendering Geranium anemonifolium superfluous and illegitimate when published.
Correspondence 5 22 Mar 2006, from Editor of this Index see Comment 5
Editorial Comments 5 There are four records of this taxon in SMASCH, three as Geranium anemonifolium (one in UC/JEPS, UC1787353) representing a single collection, J. P. Rebman, S. Huemmer 6697, 17 May 2000 (Mission Hills, on a north facing canyon in Presidio Park; Escaped) and one as Geranium palmatum, Elizabeth McClintock, 14 Jun 1990 (Golden Gate Park, road above de Laveaga Dell; San Francisco). In the absence of evidence that the taxon represented by these collections has become naturalized, and in view of the fact it has only been collected from +/- urban environments, it is most appropriate to treat this taxon as an urban weed in California at this time.
