APOCYNACEAE (genus previously included in Asclepiadaceae)
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Philibertia hirtella (A. Gray) Parish; Philibertia linearis var. hirtella (A. Gray) A. Gray; Sarcostemma hirtellum (A. Gray) R.W. Holm
Initial Editorial Analysis 9 May 2002
Source of Report for California Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments listed as synonym of Sarcostemma hirtellum in Munz; treated as Sarcostemma hirtellum, although not specifically mentioned, in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; author citation uncertain, Sarcostemma hirtellum (A. Gray) R. Holm in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21 see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Cladistic analyses of morphological characters by Liede (Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21:31-44) indicate Sarcostemma sensu lato (e.g., Horn) is not monophyletic, but that older, smaller genera (including Sarcostemma, sensu stricto, and Funastrum) are; evidence from the trnL-F spacer region by Liede & Tauber (2000 Plant Sys Evol 225:133-140) confirms that Sarcostemma sensu lato is polyphyletic, and supports recognition of Old World taxa in genera including Sarcostemma, and New World taxa in genera including Funastrum, with the result that California taxa treated as Sarcostemma in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] are now treated in Funastrum.
Correspondence 2 20 Oct 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that Funastrum hirtellum was published by R. Schlechter (Schltr. in Authors of Plant Names) in Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis 13(363/367): 286 (1914), based on Sarcostemma heterophyllum var. hirtellum A. Gray; that the reference to Sarcostemma heterophyllum var. hirtellum A. Gray by Schlechter, although indirect in two ways (see below), was sufficient under the nomenclatural rules in effect at the time; that Schlechter based his combination on "Philibertella hirtella Vail" in Bull. Torr. Bot. Cl. 24:309. 1897, properly cited as Philibertella hirtella (A. Gray) Vail (indirect in one way); and that although Philibertella hirtella (A. Gray) Vail was indicated by Vail to be based on "Sarcostemma lineare var. hirtella A. Gray, Bot. Calif. 1:478. 1876", it instead was based on Sarcostemma heterophyllum var. hirtellum A. Gray (indirect in a second way), "heterophyllum" having been inadvertently replaced by "lineare" in the citation. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Funastrum hirtellum (A. Gray) Schltr., from Funastrum hirtellum Schltr. previously in this Index, 20 Oct 2005.]
