Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates, without further explanation, that the correct citation is Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton (Hort. Kew. ed. 1. II (1789):414). [Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Herit. in Ait. Hort. Kew. ii. 414. 1789 according to International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis. According to TL-II (Vol. 1, p. 25), the "botanical descriptions" in Vols. 1 and 2 (of Hort. Kew. ed. 1) are "mainly by Solander (who died in 1782)". In his dissertation (Flora of Nevada, 1988, p. 837), Kartesz indicates that the citation is Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. ex Solander, possibly based on what is said in TL-II, but later, in Kartesz & Meacham, Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton is indicated, suggesting Kartesz had reason to believe the description of Erodium cicutarium in Hortus Kewensis was by Aiton and not Solander. The protologue should be consulted to verify this citation (ed. 2, but not ed. 1, is held by the Jepson Herbarium Library), but for now at least the citation is changed to Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton from Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér., originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 2 1 Sep 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that the protologue for Erodium cicutarium (Hortus Kewensis 2:414. 1789) has been consulted [see Correspondence 1]; that the combination was ascribed [by Aiton, evidently] to L'Heritier, referring to an unpublished L'Heritier monograph; and that Greenhouse was unable to find in either of the 2 volumes of Hortus Kewensis an explicit statement that L'Heritier contributed to the publication. [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 20 Dec 2010.]
Correspondence 3 9 Sep 2020 e-mail from Dave Keil see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that treatments in Hortus Kewensis (see above) for Erodium and Pelargonium are absolutely parallel and should be treated in the same way with respect to authorship citations and that it appears to Keil that the argument for L'Héritier [in Aiton], as presented in this Index for Pelargonium, is convincing. [Correspondence 1 (under the following taxa in Pelargonium) indicates: that Pelargonium grossularioides, Pelargonium inquinans, Pelargonium peltatum, Pelargonium vitifolium, and Pelargonium zonale all were published in vol. 2 of William Aiton, Hortus Kewensis (1789) on pages 42, 414, 427, 425, and 424 respectively; that this work is unavailable at UCB, but has been considered in a paper on typification of the genus Pelargonium in Taxon 30:307 (1981) by J.J.A. van der Walt & P.J. Vorster (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author), who conclude that L'Héritier's (at the time) unpublished manuscript of Compendium Generalogium "was made available by L'Héritier to Aiton for the purpose of the Hort. Kew., rather than that the information was taken over by Aiton [evidently, without giving credit for the information to L'Héritier], so that the new names or combinations should be ascribed to L'Héritier alone."; and that, therefore, the correct citations are Pelargonium grossularioides (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium inquinans (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium peltatum (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium vitifolium (L.) L'Hér., and Pelargonium zonale (L.) L'Hér., as given for all in this Index. In order for the names in Erodium to be treated in the same way with respect to authorship citations as those in Pelargonium, author citation changed to Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér., from Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton previously in this Index, 16 Sep 2020.]
