Dissanthelium californicum (Nutt.) Benth.

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 14 Feb 2012
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments "PRESUMED EXTINCT (last seen in 1912)" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 1 Dec 2004 e-mail from Misa Ward see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence appended verbatim is pertinent to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] account: "Known in California from only two collections; need quads. Last seen in 1848 on SCM Isl., and before 1912 on SCT Isl. (exact year unknown). Feral goats may have caused extinction; goat population now removed from SCM Isl. and controlled on SCT Isl."
Correspondence 2 31 May 2005 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax, including forwarded article [PCA] NEWS see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Dissanthelium californicum, last seen in 1912 and considered extinct, has been rediscovered in 2005 on three islands off the coast of s California and Baja CA: Santa Catalina Island, San Clemente Island, and Guadalupe Island, as reported in an article in [PCA] NEWS.
Correspondence 3 12 Aug 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that the [PCA] NEWS article concerning the rediscovery of Dissanthelium californicum reports the finding only on Santa Catalina Island, not the other two historic locations as stated in Editorial Comments 2, and that the rediscovery is documented in Madroño 55(1) 60--68 (2008).
Correspondence 4 14 Feb 2012 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that Refulio-Rodriguez et al. (2012. Syst. Bot. 37:130) transferred Dissanthelium californicum to Poa, publishing the new name Poa thomasii N. F. Refulio-Rodriguez for that taxon (the name Poa californica was preoccupied), and that the phylogenetic data for this transfer are compelling.
Pending data Poa thomasii N. F. Refulio-Rodriguez may become the accepted name for Dissanthelium californicum (Nutt.) Benth.
