Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by J. Chris Pires see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Brevoortia venusta Greene [Dichelostemma X venustum (Greene) Hoover, pro. sp., rose firecracker flower; Dichelostemma venustum (Greene) Hoover; Brodiaea venusta (Greene) Greene], indicated to be a sporadic hybrid (fls +- horizontal, perianth rose purple, tube 14--17 mm) involving Dichelostemma ida-maia (Alph. Wood) Greene, Dichelostemma congestum (Sm.) Kunth, and Dichelostemma multiflorum (Benth.) A. Heller, is not to be recognized taxonomically, but instead is to be treated as a synonym of Dichelostemma ida-maia (Alph. Wood) Greene.
Correspondence 2 11 Jun 2014 e-mail from J. Chris Pires, author of Dichelostemma for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], in response to query from the editor of this Index see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms that Brevoortia venusta Greene, Brodiaea venusta (Greene) Greene, and Dichelostemma venustum (Greene) Hoover are not be treated as synonyms of Dichelostemma ida-maia because the plants represented by these names are hybrids. [Treating a name of an accepted hybrid as a synonym of one of the evidently three parental species involved is not correct because a hybrid belongs to neither or none of the parental species in that it has just as much of the genome of one as any other, unless of course introgression is involved, but even then it does not belong solely to any one of the parental species. Therefore, Brevoortia venusta Greene, Brodiaea venusta (Greene) Greene, and Dichelostemma venustum (Greene) Hoover removed from Current Jepson Flora Project synonyms 11 Jun 2014.]
