Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Parish attributed [in 1914, evidently citing the Parish publication of 1913 in which the combination was ined., meaning that it was in some way not validly published] the combination to Millsp., so that correct author citation is Chamaesyce setiloba (Engelm. ex Torr.) Millsp. ex Parish, abbreviated to Chamaesyce setiloba (Torr.) Parish, corrected from Chamaesyce setiloba (Torr.) Millsp. originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]. [According to International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index, it is Chamaesyce setiloba (Engelm. ex Torr.) Norton ex Parish (Publ. Carnegie Inst. Wash. 193: 110. 1913); the one other entry for this name, from IPNI-Index Kewensis, is Chamaesyce setiloba Norton (Contrib. U. S. Nat. Herb. 25: 345. 1925). Whether or not the combination by Parish in 1913 was published earlier than the one by Norton in 1913, or what otherwise might be wrong with the one by Norton in 1913, is unclear. The citation of a vol. 193 for evidently two distinct publications by Parish, for both the 1913 (Cat. Pl. Salton Sink: 6 [A S 32. C3.v. 193]) and the 1914 (Vol. 193 Trans. St. Louis Acad.) citations, is suspicious. Regardless of whether the attributed author is Millsp. or Norton, the correct, abbreviated citation is Chamaesyce setiloba (Torr.) Parish.]
Correspondence 2 27 Sep 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that: the basionym for Chamaesyce setiloba is Euphorbia setiloba, published in Torrey, Pacif. Railr. Rep. 5(2):364. (1857), where Torrey ascribed the name to "Engelm. Mss." and quoted Engelmann's Latin description, yielding Euphorbia setiloba Engelm. as the correct citation; that Chamaesyce setiloba was published in Parish Cat. pl Salton Sink:110 (1913), where Parish based the combination on Euphorbia setiloba Engelm. and ascribed the new combination to "Millsp. ined.", so that authorship of the combination is Millsp. ex Parish., yielding Chamaesyce setiloba (Engelm.) Millsp. ex Parish as the complete citation. Correspondence 2 also indicates that confusion over the correct citation has arisen for at least three reasons (cf. Editorial Comments 1): 1) Parish's 1913 publication was a preprint from a larger work published in 1914 by the Carnegie Institute of Washington and not the St. Louis Academy; 2) the only Norton publication of this combination was 12 years later in Tidestrom Contrib. U. S. Nat. Herb. 25:345. (1925) and was redundant; and 3) the ICBN rules are complex and confuse many otherwise competent botanists. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Chamaesyce setiloba (Engelm.) Millsp. ex Parish, from Chamaesyce setiloba (Torr.) Parish previously in this Index, 28 Sep 2004.]
