Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 12 Aug 2003 e-mail from Dan Post see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that in Flora North America, Carex pyrenaica is treated as a synonym of Carex micropoda, citing Flora North America author David F. Murray, " ... until a more reliable set of characters is found to distinguish these two taxa [Carex pyrenaica and Carex micropoda] all of the North American plants shall be treated as C. micropoda." [Actually, both Carex micropoda C. A. Mey. and Carex pyrenaica Wahlenb. are recognized by Murray in Flora North America; his statement under Correspondence 1 in fact only means that until there is evidence to the contrary, he is treating all North American plants as Carex micropoda, and the European plants as Carex pyrenaica.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter Zika, Andrew Hipp, & Joy Mastrogiuseppe see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Carex pyrenaica Wahlenb. is to be treated as not occurring in CA, and that in Flora North America Carex micropoda is indicated for California based on a single specimen that was misidentified by the collector as Carex pyrenaica (Inyo Co. CA, Peirson 11400 MICH), but that belongs instead to Carex subnigricans.
