Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Notes on Authorship of Name both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation corrected from Prescott in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], in accordance with Rosatti notes
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 23 Sep 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that the author citation is Carex mertensii Prescott in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott ex Bong. in TROPICOS, and Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott ex Bongard in Flora North America. [The standard for author abbreviations in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] was the Draft Index of Author Abbreviations, in which Prescott was the abbreviation for John D. Prescott ( - 1837); the abbreviation for John D. Prescott in Authors of Plant Names, the current standard for Jepson Flora Project, is J. D. Prescott; Therefore, author citation corrected to Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott ex Bong., from Carex mertensii Prescott ex Bong. previously in this Index, 23 Sep 2004.]
Correspondence 2 7 Jun 2019 e-mail from John Strother to Kanchi Gandhi, and the latter's response see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Strother, Bongard states at the beginning of "Observations sur la Vegetation de L'ile de Sitcha" (M. Bongard, Mem. Acad. Imp. Sci. St.-Petersbourg, Ser. 6, Sci. Math. 1832) that "Les Graminees ont ete examinees par M. Trinius, qui a bien voulu s'en charger, et M. Prescott a pris la peine de s'occuper des Cypéracées.", which Strother took to mean that 'M. Trinius" supplied the treatment of Gramineae and that "M. Prescott" provided the treatment of the Cyperaceae, meaning that Bongard attributed more than just the name "Carex mertensii" to Prescott, he attributed the treatment, which would have included a description, as well [verified by the editor of this Index], so that the author citation should be simply Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott. [Gandhi agreed, and International Plant Names Index has been updated to reflect this correction; therefore, author citation corrected to Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott, from Carex mertensii J. D. Prescott ex Bong. previously in this Index, 11 Jun 2019.]
