Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 25 Jan 2008 and 1 Feb 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that Mackenzie, in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 43(12): 615. 1916 [1917], published Carex paucifructus (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym), spelled that way; that all references checked (TROPICOS, International Plant Names Index, Flora North America) use the original spelling, Carex paucifructus Mack.; that even though Carex is normally treated as feminine, which would yield Carex paucifructa if the epithet were considered to be adjectival (then meaning "few-fruited), its gender would be irrelevant and the epithet would retain its own gender and termination, according to Art. 23.5 (Vienna Code), if the epithet were to be considered instead to be a noun in apposition, which would yield Carex paucifructus (then meaning "few-fruit"); and that in the absence of evidence to the contrary, the form used by the publishing author should be used. [Therefore, spelling of epithet of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected to Carex paucifructus Mack., from Carex paucifructa Mack. previously in this Index, 13 Feb 2008.]
