Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 25 Jan 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Carex polytrichoides (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]1 synonym) was published by Willdenow (Willd. in Authors of Plant Names) in Species Plantarum. Editio quarta 4(1):213 (1805), and that Willdenow ascribed the name to "Mühlenberg [sic] in litt." (Muhl. in Authors of Plant Names [actually, Muhl. in Authors of Plant Names is for Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg, 1753-1815]) but included his own Latin description. [Therefore, author citation of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym changed to Carex polytrichoides Muhl. ex Willd., from Carex polytrichoides Muhl. previously in this Index, 31 Jan 2008. In an e-mail of 31 Jan 2008, Greenhouse indicated that he has been unable to rule out the possibility that Willdenow was referring instead to Henry Ludwig Mühlenberg, 1756-1817 (H.L. Mühl. in Authors of Plant Names).]
