Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Carex cephalophora Muhl. ex Willd.
CYPERACEAE
Initial Editorial Analysis 21 Jun 2010
Notes on Authorship of Name both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation changed from Muhlenb. in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (Muhl. in Authors of Plant Names), in accordance with Rosatti notes, Kartesz & Meacham (who have Muhlenb. ex Willd.), but Muhl. ex Schkuhr in International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 30 Jul 2003 e-mail from Dan Post see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Flora North America authors Peter W. Ball and A. A. Reznicek, the record of Carex cephalophora from California is referable to Carex mesochorea.
Correspondence 2 9 Jun 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis reference for the Muhl. ex Schkuhr citation is Riedgr. ii. 4 (1806), and that this IPNI entry has been updated to note that this is a later publication of Muhl ex Willd. Sp. Pl., ed. 4 4(1):220 (1805), in which Willdenow ascribes the name to Muhlenb. in litt. and provides his own Latin description, so that the author citation is confirmed to be Carex cephalophora Muhl. ex Willd.
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter Zika, Andrew Hipp, & Joy Mastrogiuseppe see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Carex cephalophora Muhl. ex Willd. is to be treated as a name that in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] was misapplied to pls belonging instead to _Carex mesochorea_ Mack. (Group 9), native to e US, evidently collected only once, as lawn weed in SCo (Los Angeles Co.) in 1929.
