·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Athyrium alpestre Clairv.
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosorum, only, treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; "named vars in w NA seem indistinct" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Jun 2000 pers. comm. from Alan R. Smith see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates "ex Mert." added to author citation. [Franz Karl Mertens, 1764-1831.]
Correspondence 2 31 May 2002 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms resolution of author citation, and confirms that Mertens published the name, having taken it from Roth's ms.
Correspondence 3 15 Dec 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that the author citation for Athyrium filix-femina has been reconsidered by Alan Smith (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author, personal communication, 14 Dec 2004), based in part on a 7 Feb 2002 e-mail to M. Wetherwax from Kanchi Gandhi (Flora North America Nomenclatural Editor), which included an alternate translation of the original German and concluded "It is just Roth for combining authorship. It is evident that Mertens merely reproduced Roth's MS. ... In this case, Roth is the author of the novelties in the article." [Therefore, author citation corrected to Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth (as originally in this Index), from Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth ex Mert. previously in this Index, 16 Dec 2004.]
