Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 8 Jan 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Abrams (N. Amer. Fl. 29: 98, 1914) published the name Uva-ursi pechoensis Abrams. He listed Arctostaphylos pechoensis Dudley, in herb. as a synonym, apparently intending his name to be a comb. nov., to be based on Dudley's name. However, by current ICBN rules, Arctostaphylos pechoensis Dudley was not effectively published, so it can't serve as a basionym. Abrams name was therefore new in 1914, and not a comb. nov. Later, Abrams (Ill. fl. Pacific States 3: 322, 1951) published Arctostaphylos pechoensis (Abrams) Dudley ex Abrams [based on Uva-ursi pechoensis Abrams, 1914], correctly ascribing it to Dudley. John Strother (UC, pers. comm.) agrees that the author citation should be (Abrams) Dudley ex Abrams. Thus, the author citation is to be corrected to (Abrams) Dudley ex Abrams [from Arctostaphylos pechoensis Abrams, originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and this Index], which may be shorted to (Abrams) Abrams.
Correspondence 2 12 Feb 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse, including information from John Strother see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that Arctostaphylos pechoensis was published earlier than Abrams 1951; that Alice Eastwood, in Leaflets of Western Botany 1:62 (1933), published "Arctostaphylos pechoensis Dudley var. viridissima Eastwood var. nov.", with a Latin description of the variety, and that she followed this with a discussion beginning "This differs from typical A. pechoensis in the ...", thus satisfying the nomenclatural requirements for valid publication of Arctostaphylos pechoensis simultaneously with the variety (see Art. 33.3, Vienna Code), with the explanation that Abrams (N. Amer. Fl. 29: 98, 1914) published the name Uva-ursi pechoensis Abrams and in so doing listed "Arctostaphylos pechoensis Dudley, in herb." following his sp. nov., thus creating an association of the (personal) name Dudley with the publication of Uva-ursi pechoensis Abrams; that Alice Eastwood made the direct combination A. pechoensis in her discussion and ascribed that combination to Dudley in naming her var. nov.; and that Eastwood's ascription to Dudley serves also as an indirect reference to Uva-ursi pechoensis Abrams as a basionym, yielding Arctostaphylos pechoensis (Abrams) Dudley ex Eastw. (Leaflets of Western Botany 1:62. 1933) as the full citation.[Therefore, author citation corrected to Arctostaphylos pechoensis (Abrams) Dudley ex Eastw. , from Arctostaphylos pechoensis (Abrams) Dudley ex Abrams previously in this Index, 13 Feb 2008.]
